Het rommelt in het Nederlandse landschap en in gemeentelijke vergaderzalen, want de wolf is terug. Hoe welkom is de wolf in Nederland en wat zegt de comeback van de wolf over onze kijk op de natuur? Een avond over de versnippering van leefgebieden en de kunst van het waarnemen.
De mens stelt zichzelf graag centraal, met alle gevolgen van dien. De terugkeer van de wolf in Nederland zegt iets over ons gedrag ten opzichte van wilde dieren en de natuur. Onze dominantie in de wereld laat zijn sporen na: oorzaken van klimaatverandering, versnippering van leefgebieden, het uitsterven van plant- en diersoorten op enorme schaal en het verdwijnen van sleutelsoorten uit ecosystemen. En het begint met de manier waarop we naar de natuur kijken.
Het projecteren van menselijk gedrag en eigenschappen op dieren – beter bekend als antropomorfisch denken – is een hardnekkige reflex. Een belangrijke stap is leren denken met dieren, zonder onze eigen menselijke poeha op hen te projecteren. Welk perspectief – en welke veranderingen in onszelf – zijn daarvoor nodig? Hoe kunnen we waarnemen tot een kunst verheffen? Misschien ontstaat er dan zelfs ruimte om dieren met rust te laten.
Een avond in samenwerking met Singel Uitgeverij waarin de nieuwe publicatie ‘Wolven op het ruiterpad’ van Tijs Goldschmidt centraal staat.

It’s rumbling in the Dutch landscape and in municipal meeting rooms, because the wolf is back. How welcome is the wolf in the Netherlands and what does the comeback of the wolf say about our view of nature? An evening about the fragmentation of habitats and the art of observation.
Humans like to put themselves at the center, with all the consequences this entails. The return of the wolf to the Netherlands says something about our behavior compared to wild animals and nature. Our dominance in the world is leaving its mark: causes of climate change, fragmentation of habitat, the extinction of plant and animal species on an enormous scale and the disappearance of key species from ecosystems. And it starts with the way we view nature.
Projecting human behavior and traits onto animals – better known as anthropomorphic thinking – is a persistent reflex. An important step is learning to think with animals, without projecting our own human fussiness onto them. What perspective – and changes to ourselves – are needed to do this? How can we elevate observation to an art? Perhaps then there will even be room to leave animals alone.
