These are detailed illustrations that are displayed in a standardised layout. The basis of the work Identities is partly scientific; firstly there is the fundamental phrasing of the underlying question: can individual Great Grey Shrikes be recognized on the basis of their outward appearance? Secondly both in the field as in the studio a standardized procedure takes place: the structure is created by means of through observation of the variations in outer characteristics and this is manifested further by the resulting standardized profiles.
Brandsma, M., Threat Display, 2016, Materials: Softcover with singer stitch on the back, 56 pages full color, Size: 195 x 245 mm, Edition: 100, Price: € 52,- excluding VAT / Description: The book Threat Display shows collected photographs of guards according to terms of behaviour from the Handbook of the Birds of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa; Vol VII (Flycatchers to Shrikes) by S. Cramp and C.M. Perrins. In the chapter ‘Social pattern and behavior of the Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor)’ the author uses the term Threat Display: a display behaviour common for birds involved in defense of territory, often resulting in the retreat of the threatened birds, so avoiding direct conflict. The Latin word excubitor is given to the Shrike by Linnaeus, meaning watchman, sentinel or guard. A guard is a person posted at a given spot to prevent the passage of unauthorized persons or defending a specific place. Threat Display offers a biological view on the postures of guards and places it in a behavioural context >
Brandsma, M., Pruiksma, S., transmettre le chant de la pie-grièche grise, 2014, Materials: CD with poster, Size:140 x 125 mm, Edition: 25, Price:€ 45, excluding VAT / Description: The idea is derived from the book ‘Dictionary of the grey shrike and southern grey shrike’ (2010) where Brandsma collect, in alhabetical order, the calls of the Great Grey Shrikes (Lanius excubitor) from different bird books. The calls from the book are returned to the original sound by ‘pitching’ the spoken words 34x. The result gives an impression of how they heard and passed by the observers.
Brandsma, M., BCP (Black Code Project), 2014, Materials: Box (ICN quality nr.3/11)with 198 prints* on Oxford, FSC Mix Credit (acid free) 200 gr., Size: 430x350x60 mm. size: 430x350x60 mm, Edition: 7, Price of each: € 3.400 excl. 6 % BTW. / Description: BCP which stands for Black Code Project’ includes about 198 drawings of the tail feathers of the tail of a Great Grey Shrike that are located in several Dutch Natural History Museum collections. Brandsma draws the tails of the birds systematically. With its almost scientific collection he unlocks the relationship between appaerance, biodiversity and identity. He also pay attention to issues that concern not only the animal world but also that of human beings. Our identity is increasingly constructed and registered on the basis of printing, bar codes and biometrics. Text by Mirjam Westen, Museum for Modern Art, Arnhem / Scientists discovered this project; they found ‘data’ in the feathers about the condition of the individual shrikes: whether they are strong, weak, young or old. According to Dr. Reuven Yosef from the Ben-Gurion University in Negev, Israël, Dr. Piotr Tryjanowski and PhD student Anna Kubicka from the Life Science University of Poznan, Poland, something can be learned from the feather patterns about the fitness of the birds and even about sexual selection for Great Grey Shrikes. This has to do with the degree of symmetry of the patterns, combined with data about the speed at which the feathers grow. The more symmetry, the fitter the bird, and the greater its chances of reproductive success, is in any event what I picked up from this. Dr. Reuven Yosef applies his ptilochronological research on the same individual Great Grey Shrikes which I observed and drawn in the BCP. Ptilochronology is a cost effective tool for determining the nutritional condition of birds. The technique uses the daily growth of feathers to decipher diet and habitat quality as well as contaminant load. The growing bars are best seen under very good lightning conditions.Dr. Reuven Yosef wanted to investigate if there is a coherence between the results of his ptilochronological research and the symmetric / asymmetric patterns of the BCP. Anna Kubicka provides assistence by using Tps dig 2 program to measure these patterns with landmarks >
