muotka

Dressed in a costume, representing the Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor), the Sami shaman and a guard, I took a journey (on different levels) in the North-Western part of Lapland. In a performance documented in photographs I research and tried to find answers about the relationship between the Great Grey Shrike, Sami (people) and the landscape. The performance also refers to predecessors as Linnaeus.

’If I was a Great Grey Shrike, how would I look at the world?’

Dressed Brandsma’s experiences form the starting point for muotka (‘a journey’ in the Sami-language), a performance-exhibition in which Brandsma exposes his relationship with the Great Grey Shrike and invites the visitor to look at the world and at one self by the eyes of this watcher.

Iva Ivanova: “The feeling reminded me of entering a womb, or being buried in the ground like shamans do with their students to train them. I sat on the ground and started watching the moving fabric. I saw the four cardinal directions marked – white, black, yellow, red. I started reading people’s questions, they were so different: “Tell me what is your dream? When are you tired? Is it going to be a boy or a girl? How does it feel to fly?” I was still not sure about my question but I was intrigued by the fact that the visitors of the exhibition perceived the artist as a fortune-teller, a modern day sorcerer”.

title: transmettre le chant de la pie-grièche grise
materials: CD with poster
size: 28 x 12,5 cm / folded: 14 x 12,5 cm
edition: 25
description: The idea is derived from the book Dictionary of the Great Grey Shrike & Southern Grey Shrike, 2010 where I collect, in alphabetical order, the calls and songs of the Great Grey Shrikes (lanius excubitor) from different bird books. The calls and songs from the Dictionary are returned to the original sound by ‘pitching’ the spoken words 34x. The result gives an impression how the sound is heard by the observers.
collaboration: Sytse Pruiksma.
