BCP (Black Code Project)

Observation of the natural environment is a crucial starting point for Martin Brandsma. BCP which stands for Black Code Project' includes about 198 drawings of the tail feathers of the tail of a Great Grey Shrike that are located in several Dutch Natural History Museum collections. Brandsma draws the tails of the birds systematically. With its almost scientific collection he unlocks the relationship between appaerance, biodiversity and identity. He also pay attention to issues that concern not only the animal world but also that of human beings. Our identity is increasingly constructed and registered on the basis of printing, bar codes and biometrics.

BCP (Black Code Project) . Collaboration

In 2014 I start a collaboration with Dr. Reuven Yosef from the Ben-Gurion University in Negev, Israël wiith assistence from Dr. Piotr Tryjanowski and PhD student Anna Kubicka from the Life Science University of Poznan, Poland.

The starting point for this collaboration is the BCP Project. Recently, I worked with Dr. Reuven Yosef at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden. He applies his ptilochronological research on the same individual great grey shrikes which I observed and drawn in the BCP Project.

Ptilochronology is a cost effective tool for determining the nutritional condition of birds. The technique uses the daily growth of feathers to decipher diet and habitat quality as well as contaminant load. The growing bars are best seen under very good lightning conditions.Dr. Reuven Yosef wanted to investigate if there is a coherence between the results of his ptilochronological research and the symmetric / asymmetric patterns of the tail feathers. Anna Kubicka provides assistence by using Tps dig 2 program to measure these patterns with landmarks.
